How to prepare a baby bottle?

15th October 2024

Preparing a baby bottle is something you will be doing many times, and very soon you will be able to do it with ease. However, for the first few times, it can be helpful to have a few tips and we are here to help:

  • Check the condition of the container: Do not use the product if the container is damaged or leaking.
  • Prepare each bottle immediately before use. Once prepared, it is recommended to finish it within the hour.
  • Use up the infant formula within one month of opening the container.
  • Do not use a microwave: It will not heat the formula evenly and can cause pockets of heat that may burn your baby's mouth.

Steps to prepare the feeding bottle:

  1. Wash your hands and clean the surface where you are going to prepare the bottle.
  2. Once the bottle, teat and screw cap are clean, boil them in water for at least 3 minutes.
  3. In a separate container, boil some drinking water and let cool according to the instructions on the label. Pour the appropriate amount of water into the sterilised bottle.
  4. Add the recommended amount of formula. Use the measuring scoop provided in the container to add level scoops of powdered milk to the bottle, following the dosing chart on the label.
  5. Close the bottle and shake until the contents are completely and evenly mixed.
  6. Check the temperature of the bottle before giving it to your baby.

Important:

  • Failure to follow the directions for preparation may result in changes to the texture and effectiveness of the formula.
  • To ensure safe storage of the formula container: Once opened, keep the container closed and store it in a cool, dry place. Use the infant formula within one month of opening.
  • For vulnerable babies: Extreme care should be taken when preparing the bottle for newborns (under 28 days) and premature, low birth weight or immuno-compromised babies. Click here  to read the recommendations of the World Health Organization.
